Outdoor Post Lighting -Different Types For Different FunctionsTraditionally the best way of lighting exteriors was with burning torches. These were the forerunners of today’s outdoor post lighting. Torches provided light from a raised level and were usually placed in holders. These would have a decorative or aesthetic appearance. It is much the same with post lights today. A light source contained above ground level which is functional and pleasing to the eye.
Of course outdoor post lighting can be highly varied in style. From a minimalist post with glass or other transparent material globe to a brass or cast iron coach style lamp on a decorative wrought iron stand… and everything in between! Brass is a popular choice for light fittings with steel or iron posts as are traditional white painted versions.
People enjoy lining their driveway with little miniature post lights which serve a purpose and are appealing to any visitor to the household. These posts also adorn decks, are placed in planters and can be positioned anywhere around your yard for maximum light where it is most needed.
Post lights vary in size from a few inches to 6 feet (2 meters) or more. The type of outdoor post lighting you require is dependent on your circumstances. Do you wish to have one good source of light to the front of your property? Perhaps a medium to large sized statement post on the front lawn or next to the entrance will be ideal.
Do you need a lower accent light source? Then you would find a few short post lights should suit you. Building in posts in the hard landscaping is a good idea if you are adding patios or retaining walls, raised flower beds etc.
Post lights are also popular in the outdoor solar lights range. There are many deigns which cam be simply pushed into the soil or planters to provide a glowing night light. In general these solar lights are not very powerful and are just a pretty feature and are often designed as such. The colored ‘lightning effect’ globes are a fun choice if this is the kind of thing you want.
Outdoor post lighting is not so suited to feature lighting. Floodlights and up/down lighters are much better for this kind of task. The outdoor post lighting you choose will probably be so attractive to you that it will become a feature point in your garden all by itself!
